India to Designate No-Go Zones for Windmill Installation in Border Areas

India is likely to soon outline specific prohibited zones for the installation of renewable energy projects in sensitive and border areas, aiming to reduce uncertainty and enhance investor confidence in the sector, according to a CNBC report.

Sources cited by CNBC revealed that the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, recently held discussions with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on this issue. During the meeting, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) urged the Defence Ministry to issue only prospective restrictions—applicable to future projects—particularly for wind energy developments.

The MNRE has been pushing for greater clarity on no-go zones to make renewable projects more attractive and secure for private and institutional investment.

Currently, developers of power and commercial-scale solar and wind energy projects must obtain a No-Objection Certificate (NoC) from the Defence Ministry. The Ministry has established a web portal to streamline the NoC process, which requires applicants to specify precise latitude and longitude coordinates for accurate site assessment.

In previous instances, the Defence Ministry has raised concerns about renewable energy projects, especially along the India-Pakistan border. Objections have included potential interference with military operations and surveillance, both on land and at sea.
